Paying Homage to Andrew Garrett
These beautiful illustrations of fish by American naturalist and explorer Andrew Garrett are from “Fishe der Sudsee” published between 1873 – 1910. Garrett lived on the island of Huahine with his wife Otari from 1870 until his death in 1887. His grave is located about 250 meters northwest of the wharf in Fare, Huahine.
Born in 1823, on the east coast of the USA, he left home at the age of 16 and traveled extensively as a crew member on whaling ships. He developed a keen interest in Conchology (the study of shells) and in 1853 he settled in Hawaii to develop his collection.
In Hawaii, he learned Latin, taught himself to draw and paint, and became well-known for his research and artistic abilities. His work was well received by the scientific community and he was elected a member of the California Academy of Sciences in 1856. This began a period of extensive traveling and research throughout the Pacific where he worked in collaboration with researchers, museums and institutions throughout the world while publishing 21 scientific papers.
His collection of 22,000 shells (one of the most complete for the Pacific at the time) and his library were purchased by the Bishop Museum after his death, and are now part of the museum’s archives and Malacology collections.
